Does your car need new parts? You have to consider a few things before making the purchase, as auto parts can be expensive. You don’t want the sum you spent to go to waste, now do you? Read ahead.
Are You Going New or Old?
Whatever auto part you’re thinking of buying, you’ll have to decide between going the new or old route. New ones are more expensive, but they’re investments. They’re in great condition, so you don’t have to worry about replacing them in a few years. This means no cash spent on a replacement, and you won’t have to pay to get someone to install it either.
Older alternatives don’t usually come with warranties too. And if they do, they wouldn’t be very extensive.
Bring a Mechanic
You could pay a mechanic to come with you. He would examine the auto part you’re interested in, letting you know if it’s good or not. He would also let you know if it would work with your vehicle.
A lot of the time, you have to consider dimensions and make sure the product would be the right fit. If you’re buying something like a power steering pump, this would especially be true for it.
Is It Genuine?
Not only do you have to make sure what you want to buy will fit, but you need to know it’s the real deal. A mechanic would keep his eye out for this. However, you could be buying the product online. He won’t be able to examine it through a computer screen.
If it’s not genuine, you’d be getting scammed, as you’d be paying much more than what it’s worth. What you bought might not work either – it’s not compatible with your vehicle.
How do you know if it’s genuine when buying online? Through OEM numbers. You can check the OEM site and run the code through.
You’ll also be able to know by looking at the seller’s licenses. They should be present and renewed.
How Much Is It?
You don’t need me to tell you that auto parts can be expensive. If you’re not careful, you could spend an arm and a leg. To make sure you don’t spend too much, look around before you settle on a seller.
As mentioned, buying used would mean you’d have to pay less – you might be tempted to go this route. But don’t forget that the car part may not be that reliable, so you’ll have to replace it soon.
To save the most cash, wait and make the purchase. Dealers might offer sales at certain times of the year.
Auto parts are not cheap. They cost thousands of dollars a lot of the time. You have to be careful, as this cash could be flushed down the drain. Make sure that you buy from someone that offers genuine parts. You can make sure of this by checking the products’ OEM numbers, as well as the license the seller has.
You also have to decide between new vs old. As mentioned, the new route is better.
